So the trick is to click in the password field first, then type Control-Option-⌘-Delete. Then I tried Control-Option-⌘-Delete, and it worked! In the case of desktop Macs, pulling the power cable also works. This can be accomplished by holding the power button for five seconds. The only fix I know is to do a forced shutdown.
